Tavola tratta dalla ' Raccolta di alcune delle più belle vedute d'Italia con brevi annotazioni dell'Abate R. Venuti Presidente delle Antichità di Roma e Socio delle Accademie Reali d'Inghilterra, intagliate da vari celebri incisori. Roma 1761, una rara raccolta di vedute iniziate ed eseguite da James Forrester (Dublino, 1729 - Roma, 1775) su disegno di Peter Stephens membri della nutrita, interessante colonia di artisti anglosassoni presente a Roma nel XVIII secolo (Bryan: "James Forrester resided several years in Italy where he etched several plates of landscapes, which are executed in a neat and pleasing style"; Bénézit, XII, p. 229: "S. P. Dessinateur amateur. A publié en 1761 à Londres un Album de quelques vues d'Italie.").La committenza dell'opera si deve all'Abate Ridolfino Venuti (Cortona, 1705 - Roma, 1763), uno dei maggiori archeologi del sec. XVIII, autore della celebre ' Descrizione topografica delle antichità di Roma, membro della Royal Society di Londra, e con i fratelli Niccolò e Filippo, archeologi anch'essi, fondatore della celebre Accademia Etrusca di Cortona. La raccolta venne integrata e ristampata nel 1767; alcune delle 150 tavole di questo volume sono firmate da "Nicole" (Claude François Nicole I, 1700-1783) molte altre sono firmate da James Forrester, un paio sono firmate da George Dance, Christopher Norton o James Roberts. La maggior parte degli altri è contrassegnata da un particolare monogramma che sembra "WR" o "WR D.", presumibilmente riferito a un altro disegnatore. Molte hanno titoli e numeri di lastra incisi; i numeri doppi indicano un gruppo di Nicole e un altro di Forrester. La maggior parte delle tavole, tuttavia, non è firmata né da Nicole né da Forrester ed è di qualità nettamente inferiore. The commissioning of the work is due to Abbot Ridolfino Venuti (Cortona, 1705 - Rome, 1763), one of the leading archaeologists of the 18th century, author of the famous ' Descrizione topografica delle antichità di Roma, member of the Royal Society of London, and with his brothers Niccolò and Filippo, also archaeologists, founder of the famous Accademia Etrusca of Cortona. The collection was integrated and reprinted in 1767; some of the 150 plates in this volume are signed by "Nicole" (Claude François Nicole I, 1700-1783) many others are signed by James Forrester, a couple are signed by George Dance, Christopher Norton or James Roberts.
