FOREWORD
The impression that a hurried observer may experience
by a first encounter with our typical Alpine province could
be one of scenic beauty only, stupendously synthesized
as it is by its famous dolomitic peaks, its magnificent wood-
ed areas, its lakes and streams. In fact, the agricultural
production of the province plays a social and economic
role of basic importance for the local population and on
an international scale for the quality and quantity yielded
and the countless variety of its produce.
The Alto Adige is a land of extreme varieties endowed
with valleys sheltered from northern winds, where, since
ancient times, thanks to the mild and sunny climate renowned
cultivations are fostered and visitors from abroad come to
enjoy the beneficial effects of sunshine and Mediterranean
climate.
It is indeed because of this sensitive balance between
natural environment and agricultural production that it has
been considered essential to abridge into a single publi-
cation details of the special features of tourism and wine
and fruit production in the Alto Adige, so close and so
inseparably linked together, while contributing to a greater
diffusion and therefore knowledge of these aspects.
Sponsored by the «Assessorato al Commercio» and' pub-
lished in an elegant edition, this book aims to increase
the availability to experts and interested persons of ele-
ments and data concerning our production which, though
not comparable in quantity to that of some other Italian
provinces, offers remarkable characteristic qualities. These
are due to constant research work and experimentation in
the technical field and also to expansion and modernization
of the producers’ Consortia which have promoted a notable
progress at all commercial levels.
The requests for our wines - especially from abroad - bear
witness to their high quality obtained by the vocational
care put into the cultivation of our vineyards, by the new
enological techniques applied to the traditional methods
of winemaking, as well as by intelligent sales promotion.
The production of apples and pears presents similar fea-
tures. Here, greater production costs due to geographic
and climate conditions have obliged operators in the sector
to offset disadvantages by producing a variety of apples
and pears of superior quality and famous for their taste,
fragrancy and durability. Furthermore, rational and efficient
systems of conservation and distribution are in use.
Thus, in the face of an assertive publicity program aiming
to sell quantity rather than quality to a large consumer
market, our promotional action intends to convey by means
of neat and clearly eloquent illustrations the organoleptic
characteristics, the selection and quality of our local pro-
duce in order to guide the consumer in a positive way.
Hoping to have reached all intended aims, I wish that this
initiative will obtain ample acclaim for its content and for
the careful and diligent task accomplished.
