Edizione: one of the scarcest books in the wyeth oeuvre. illustrated with four dramatic plates, mary johnston's historical novel follows general stonewall jackson through major battles of the civil war. blending historical events with fictional characters, it has long been praised for its realistic portrayal of army life and the human costs of war. johnston, whose grandfather was confederate general joseph e. johnston, paved the way for later civil war-based fiction such as gone with the wind.<br> the long roll was also one of the few times that wyeth actually consulted with the author of a story he was illustrating—wyeth visited johnston at her home in warm springs, virginia, and engaged in a lively correspondence with her while working on the four paintings that would illustrate her story.
