Oswald Iding or 'Whiteblade' ruled Northumbria for just eight years after a youth spent in exile. Bede gives an account of his life which provides a glimpse of an heroic figure who may be the 'real' Beowulf. Certainly Tolkien used him as the model for his prodigal prince, Aragorn, in The Lord of the Rings. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION.
