First Edition and First Printing of this important work with earliest state of the ads (dated January, 1863). With engraved frontispiece and a number of Illustrations throughout the text. Tall 8vo, bound in antique three-quarter dark brown calf over marbled boards, the spine with raised bands ruled in gilt, four compartments with decorative device in blind, two compartments with dark burgundy morocco labels gilt ruled and lettered, gilt date at the spine foot. xii, 520 pp, 30pp ads. A handsome copy of this important scientific work, the text nearly free of foxing or toning, the paper quite fresh, some old marginal notations in blue pencil, common in science books of the period and inoffensive. The binding is very sturdy and strong, with very little evidence of age or use.
