First edition in English, published simultaneously with the German and the only English translation authorized by the author. 8vo, publisher’s original terra--cotta cloth ruled in black on the spine and both covers, the spine lettered in gilt. xvi, 505; [vi], 714; x, 597; x, 461; viii, 490; [vi], 352; xiv, 459 pp. A good set, some volumes a bit mellowd and with some light edgewear, others still quite bright and without the rubbing, two volumes with old ownership stamps from a parish.
Edizione: both through his books and through his lectures at the university of chicago, von holst exerted a powerful influence in encouraging american students to follow more closely the german methods of historical research. his principal work is this “constitutional and political history”, which covers the period from 1750 to 1853. it is written from a strongly anti-slavery point of view.
