Edizione: george bernard shaw's final major success and one which remains especially pertinent today. written in 1928 and first performed in 1929, the apple cart is a witty political satire that uses a constitutional crisis to explore questions of democracy, monarchy, capitalism, and leadership. set in a near-future england, one of the play's most modern aspects is the fictional corporation breakages, ltd. shaw suggests that the real danger to democracy is not monarchy but enormous corporations capable of influencing governments. reading the play today, many critics see it as anticipating debates about lobbying, multinational corporations, privatization, and money in politics. there are other themes of the play which also still feel remarkably up-to-date, such as politicians driven by polls and media, and public distrust of elected officials.
