1993 marks the twentieth anniversary of Hayden White's publication of Metahistory. The Historical Imagination in Nineteenth-Century Europe.
In the past twenty years a radical reorientation has taken place in the methodological debate about historiography and in the discussion about a narrative approach to and a structural analysis of reality. Metahistory effectively marked a step forward in this process of reorientation; throughout these two decades it has been subjected to a minute scrutiny as a highly controversial work and a seminal contribution to the sharpening of historical consciousness in fields as diverse as intellectual history, literary criticism, history of philosophy, and anthropology.
This is therefore an appropriate moment to critically assess the importance of Metahistory in the context of the international discussion by tracing its reception in the different cultural settings and to confront it with the most relevant issues in the current debate about the nature of history-writing.
This issue and the following one will contain essays on different aspects of Metahistory by scholars from heterogeneous cultural traditions. The aim of these numbers of Storia della Storiografia is twofold: not only to give evidence to the impact of Metahistory on both the theoretical discussion and the practice of history, but also to call attention to those approaches that go beyond Metahistory and point to future developments.
The collection is introduced by an interview with Hayden White by Ewa Domanska, in which White makes some interesting points about the way his own work may be interpreted: a sort of ironical and surprising interpretatio authentica.
Against this background the following essays deal with the critical analysis of the theoretical premises and the implementation of White's ideas. A second section is devoted to articles which contrast Metahistory with recent scholarship on such topics as historiography in Ancient Greece, and Nazism. Essays on the reception of Metahistory in Italy, Spain and Germany will complete this thorough discussion of a controversial and epoch-making work.

«Storia della Storiografia» nacque nel 1982 per iniziativa del Comitato per la storia della storiografia, costituito al XV Congresso Internazionale di Scienze Storiche tenutosi a Bucarest nell'agosto 1980. Il Comitato decise la creazione di una rivista semestrale che rappresentasse un punto di riferimento per tutti gli studiosi interessati alla storia della storiografia. La gestione redazionale e scientifica fu inizialmente affidata ad un gruppo con sede a Milano (Italia) e guidato da Bianca Valota Cavallotti (Università di Milano), una studiosa italiana che si occupa della storia dell'Europa dell'Est. Alla fine del 1990 la rivista fu spostata a Torino sotto la cura di Giuseppe Ricuperati, docente di Storia Moderna presso il Dipartimento di Storia. Dal 1991 è stata infine guidata congiuntamente da George Iggers, Edoardo Tortarolo, con la partecipazione di Giuseppe Ricuperati e Guido Abbattista. Dopo pochi anni, il Comitato scientifico fu modificato ancora una volta, con la nomina di George Iggers, Edoardo Tortarolo e Guido Abbattista direttori congiunti. Tra i fascicoli pubblicati sotto la direzione di questo gruppo sono da notare, in particolare, alcuni del tutto o in parte monografici, come il n. 24 (1993) su Hayden White's Metahistory twenty years after, il n. 37 (2000) su Periodization in History and Historiography: An Intercultural comparison, il n. 48 (2005) su Beyond science in historical theory, o, più recentemente, il n. 55 (2009 ) su Making sense of Presence: philosophy, history and politics.

«Storia della Storiografia» was born in 1982 by initiative of the Committee for the History of Historiography, constituted at the 15th International Congress of Historical Sciences held in Bucharest, August 1980. The Committee deliberated the foundation of a six-month journal that worked as point of reference for world scholars interested in the history of historiography. The management and scientific editorship was initially trusted to a group located in Milan (Italy) and led by Bianca Cavallotti Valota (University of Milan), an Italian scholar Working on East-European history. At the end of 1990 the journal was moved to Turin under the care of Giuseppe Ricuperati, Professor of Modern History at the Department of History. Since 1991 the journal has been jointly led by George Iggers, Edoardo Tortarolo, with the participation of Giuseppe Ricuperati and Guido Abbattista. After a few years, the leading team was modified again, with the appointment of George Iggers, Edoardo Tortarolo and Guido Abbattista as joint-editors. Among the issues published under the editorship of this group, particularly noticeable are some entirely or partially monographic ones, like issue n. 24 (1993) on Hayden White's Metahistory twenty years after, n. 37 (2000) on Periodization in History and Historiography: An Intercultural comparison, n. 48 (2005) on Beyond science in historical theory, or, more recently, n. 55 (2009) on Making sense of Presence: philosophy, history and politics.

«Storia della Storiografia» is an International Scholarly Journal and it is Indexed in CARHUS Plus+, ERIH Plus (European Science Foundation), Historical Abstracts and L'Année philologique.
La rivista pubblica articoli sottoposti a procedura di "revisione tra pari" mediante procedimento cosiddetto "a doppio cieco" (double blind peer review). I revisori sono assolutamente indipendenti dagli autori e non affiliati alle medesime istituzioni.
