Rare first edition of this military treatise on the design and construction of 'regular' fortifications. It is the first ever text on military architecture to be published in Parma. It was published posthumously by Giuseppe Foliati, a sergeant major in the Austrian army, and by him dedicated to Odoardo Farnese. The author was a colonel in the imperial infantry, participating in the sieges of Vercelli (1617), Eixleben (1630) and Regensburg (1634), before spending the final years of his life at the Farnese court.
In early modern military architecture, 'regular' referred to geometric fortresses with symmetrical layouts (such as pentagons, hexagons or star-shaped designs), which were optimised to withstand modern artillery. This book is a product of mid-17th-century European interest in the tracé à l'italienne (the Italian star-fort design). It details the mathematical and geometrical principles required to lay out bastions, curtains, ditches and ramparts, ensuring there were no blind spots for the defending soldiers. By 1646, gunpowder and heavy artillery had completely transformed European warfare, and treaties such as Lombardi's explained how to construct low, thick, earth-filled brick walls capable of withstanding cannon fire. The book emphasises 'regular' engineering, proving that geometry was the ultimate defence tool. The text is divided into 70 chapters, many of which deal with measurement and graphic representation using the sector. Chapters 26 to 47 discuss the geometric shape of cities and the number of bastions, while chapters 58 to 70 focus on the fortification of cities and defence techniques.
