Later yellow cloth with mounted title. = Early volume of this important, well-illustrated volcanological journal, edited by Immanuel Friedländer in Napels (close to Mount Vesuvius!). On the title page a library stamp of the Dutch geology professor Berend George 'Beer' Escher (1885-1967) elder half-brother of the world-famous Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher. Escher created several bookplates. This is one of his firsts. It shows a stylized volcano with the text 'Ex Libris B G Escher'. It is a little-known fact that Escher made two versions of this bookplate. The more common one is 50 mm x 50 mm in size. This item, however, contains a 30 mm x 30 mm version, only passingly mentioned in Bool and very rarely seen. Another stamp of a Dutch geological institute on the title, and a small, round label on the front board. Otherwise a very good copy. Bool, 91 (for Escher).
