8vo [21 x 13.5 cm]; xl, 464 pp, frontis folding map (short tear), bibliog. original cloth, edges worn, spine ends repaired with cloth, inscription on endpaper, contemporary reviews of book pasted on endpaper, the editor's copy with his small inkstamp, very good, interior quite clean. A picture of this book is available upon requ Work 205. Krapf in 1848 was the first to see snow-clad Mount Kenya, which was greeted by disbelief in Europe but was later confirmed by others. Sykes (History of Exploration): 'he had blazed the trail for greater explorers'. It was only more recently that Krapf's explorations have been recognized as significant. The appendix on the mountains of Eastern Africa, the sources of the Nile, the languages of Abyssinia and Eastern Africa and the geographical researches of the area is by E. J. Ravenstein.
