First edition, folio, xvii, 229pp., including index, no. 464 of 500 numbered copies signed by the author, signs of a label having been removed from verso of title, hand-coloured frontis., (the St. Christopher of 1423), 230 wood engravings (some being proofs on India paper), later half red calf, rubbed, uncut Linton's crowning achievement and the most sumptuous book on wood-engraving in the English language. There is historical coverage of knife work and graver work from the fifteenth century onwards. As well as writing the text Linton also cut several of the blocks for page plates and other illustrations.
