Sm., 4to., First Edition [Sole Edition], with 20 fine chromolithographed plates finished by hand, illuminated borders and initials, wanting front free endpaper, some moderate spotting throughout; contemporary full burgundy calf, boards elaborately blocked in blind and lettered in gilt, back with four raised bands, bevelled boards, gilt edges, very neatly recased, a very good, firm copy. 'This book was completed for Longman Brown Green and Longmans the last day of October at the Studio of Lewis Gruner in the Year of our Lord 1847'. The plates by Humphreys are illuminated by Gruner, 'and probably printed in the establishment of Owen Jones, whose style the illuminations resemble' (McLean: Victorian Book Design, p.92).
