Edizione: an especially fresh and bright copy, this is the first american edition in one volume, printed to be uniform with other scribner's editions of verne's work. it is a scarce edition, and is honestly the most pleasing format.
the giant raft should not be overlooked in the genre of victorian adventure novels. most of the novel is set on a large timber raft, called a jangada, as a ranch owner and his family are forced to float down the amazon from the peruvian-brazilian border to the river's mouth at belem. verne describes the raft, the river, and the journey in vivid detail.
while the giant raft has been overshadowed by verne's more famous works such as journey to the center of the earth and twenty-thousand leagues.; he is in his full glory as he describes the wildlife, fauna, and landscape of the amazon region. ultimately the story is one of family, honor, and loyalty. this novel should be found on all verne-lovers book shelves.
