First English edition, small 8vo (145 x 95 mm), [8], 160pp., engraved frontispiece portrait, title within typographic border, woodcut initials and headpieces, light offsetting onto title, some occasionalminor dampstaining to foot, but generally very bright and clean, small neat ink stamp to foot of L8 verso and front paste-down, later half calf, rebacked. Benjamin Welles (1616-1678) rare English translation of Bauderonís ëPharmacopÈeí, which was first published in Lyon in 1583. Brice Bauderon (1539ñ1623) was a notable French physician born in Paray-le-Monial. He studied medicine at Montpellier and later practised in M‚con. He was the author of several influential works including ëPraxis Medicaí (1620) and this, his most widely respected work, which saw numerous editions and was highly regarded in his time. His contributions to medicine, particularly in pharmacology, left a lasting impact. Provenance: From the library of Dr. & Mrs. H. R. Knohl with the Fox Pointe bookplate to rear paste-down.
