For more than 165 years, Chicago's citizens have rallied for the creation and protection of parkland, and the city's parks have long served as a national testing ground for revolutionary ideas, programs, and social reform efforts. Indeed, nearly a quarter of Chicago's existing 555 parks were created or shaped by some of the nation's most significant architects, landscape designers, and artists, such as Frederick Law Olmsted, Daniel H. Burnham, Jens Jensen, Alfred Caldwell and Lorado Taft."
After an introductory essay presents the history of Chicago's parks, 32 of the city's finest parks are profiled, using fine-art photographs- both contemporary and historical -along with detailed vignettes and captions to trace their development. The visual treat of the book's images combines with its emphasis on narrative history to create a rich exploration of the city's most beautiful sites. A glossary and suggested readings complete the book's utility for general readers and specialists alike.
