Der erste Teil des Tarikh al-Ya'qubi ist der Geschichte der Welt bis zum Auftreten des Islam gewidmet, der zweite Teil ist der Geschichte des Islam von der Ernennung des Propheten bis zum Kalifat des al-Muhtadi des Abbasiden-Kalifen (869 - 870) gewidmet.
