Berlin, Ex officina Academia, 1828. Folio (49.8 x 35.0 cm). Original chromolithographed plate, finished by hand. = This is a rare plate, numbered I, showing Red Sea algae. Part of a large work on the natural history of northeastern Africa and the Middle East, published piecemeal, always in issues with ten plates, over a long period. Traditionally the work is attributed to "Ehrenberg and Hemprich", but Hemprich died, en route, in 1825, and his compatriot and fellow explorer Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg (1795-1876) published the results. This fine plate is made after original drawings made by Ehrenberg. A few tiny spots, a few short tears in the right and lower outer margins, otherwise very good. The colouring is excellent.
