Front cover detached, but present. Rubbing and minor bleeding to the morocco boards. Front endpaper a bit browning along edges and generally with some occasional browning. Binding is gapping in places. ; 28 pages of text, followed by 46 engraved plates all present, including many fold outs over two pages. In contemporary morocco, with calf corners. Front endpaper is SIGNED "John H. James, 24 March 1866." James was a prominent Ohio lawyer who amassed an admirable private library. Three pages of notes tipped-in on front endpaper, in James' hand, originating from Dolney's Travels in Syria and Egypt (1783) , reflecting upon Wood's work. Internally handsome. In mauve custom made box with label. - Wood's work as an archeological pioneer was mostly noted in Europe. The book was published after an extensive exploration through Egypt, Syria and Mesopotamia. The Ruins of Baalbek (as the nowadays Lebanese city is called) are among the largest and most significant Roman ruins. They consist of the Temple of Bacchus and the Temple of Jupiter. The steel engravings are masterworks and the detail studies of the columns include measurements as well. ; Engravings; Folio
