Thick 4to. Later half calf, gilt lettering on spines. Faenza, Gioseffantonio Archi, 1792-97. The authoritative history of the council of Trent which took place from 1545 to 1563, by cardinal Pietro Sforza Pallavicino (or Pallavicini, 1607-1667). He joined the Jesuit Order in 1637, and was professor of theology at the Collegium Romanum. After the publication of the rather negative account of the council by Sarpi, published under the pseudonym Pietro Soave Pollano in 1619, Pallavicino was ordered to write a new history, based on material already gathered, and with unlimited access to the secret archives of the Vatican. His well-balanced and comprehensive account was initially published in 1656-57; in 1733, the annotated edition by Zaccaria was printed for the first time and saw three more editions. The concil of Trent's main purpose was to react against Protestantism. Catholic teachings were formulated more precisely, and documents for teaching were published. Points of discussion were, a.o., the Vulgate, original sin, the sacraments, the concept of purgatory, the worship of relics, and indulgences. Two important reformations were the institution of a High Altar and the founding of seminaries for priests. - Old small stamp of a Swiss Capuchin monastery on titles, otherwise a fine, clean copy. - de Backer/Sommervogel, VI, 120-143.
