8vo., First Edition, with frontispiece, 21 plates on 14 and 2 full-page maps in the text; handsomely bound in burgundy full crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, gilt top, hand-made endpapers, ribbon marker, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. Classic account of the kidnapping of General Karl Kreipe on the island of Crete; yet another episode in the astonishing war service of Paddy Leigh Fermor. Initial requests for publication had been denied as recently as 1945, and the book was chosen to lead the BBC's famous radio series 'Now it can be told' of 1950. It is also the basis of Powell & Pressburger's feature film (1957) starring Dirk Bogarde and Marius Goring. Enser, p.120.
