Giambattista and Lorenzo Bregno is the first book dedicated to the life and work of the two brothers who were seminal to the development of a quintessentially Venetian idiom in sculpture during the Renaissance. Through a meticulous examination of all extant documents, as well as all works that have been traditionally attributed to these artists, Anne Markham Schulz reconstructs their biographies and defines the stylistic criteria according to which she assigns their authorship to a number of works published here for the first time. In her search for sources for the Bregno brothers' work, Schulz outlines the development of their individual styles and explores the relationship of their sculpture to comparable Venetian works, including contemporary painting. Moreover, her study sets their work against the context of Venice in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, demonstrating the impact of unique social and economic circumstances on their careers. Her analysis of the Bregnos' patronage demonstrates that the artists, as the favored sculptors of the Venetian patriciate, received the most important sculptural commissions of their time. Size: 4to.
