Thick 8vo. 908 [xi, 614; 283] pp, several text engravings, three folded geological profiles and one hand-coloured geological map with 13 different colours. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt lines and title. Speckled edges. = A very good copy of the uncommon first edition of an early and important geological and soil science monograph on Germany by the famous German geologist Carl Berhard von Cotta (1808-1879). Dedicated to Alexander von Humboldt. From the Fürstenberg library with its library stamp on title and inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Fürstlicher Hofbibliothek von Ihrem Bibliothekar". A few light, marginal spots, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Ward and Carozzi, 525.
