(.) Hopefully we will not have to wait too long for these, however, since this first volume contains a fascinating assemblage of essays." (John Wagstaff, in: Fontes Artis Musicae, 59/4, 2012, p. 403-406) SUMMARY The history of music collecting is a new scholarly phenomenon. This project, launched by the Fondation Royaumont following its acquisition of the library of the pianist François Lang (1908-1944), is being carried out by an international team of research scholars. This first volume attempts to define the music collection in all its different forms by means of both portraits of some of the great European collectors and analysis of several excellent collections that date from the sixteenth century to the present day (including those of João IV of Portugal, Padre Martini, Henry Prunières, and others). The next two volumes will be devoted to "the musician as collector" and "the learned collector".
