In eight volumes. 8vo (21.6 x 14.0 cm). 4252 pp. [I: xxxi, 524; II: xxi, 548; III: xxv, 586; IV: xxi, 534; V: xxii, 455; VI: xv, 368; VII: xx, 512; VIII: xxv, 549]; some text figures. Uniform republisher's blind-stamped brown cloth with gilt title on the spines. = A fine, clean set of this important series which was published over a long period and very rare, nowadays. This is the - also - rare but excellent 1937 reprint, with bindings close to the original editions. The word acanthopterygian was dropped from the title after volume IV, as the last four parts dealt with other groups of fishes too. In the preface of the last volume, J. E. Grey noted that British Museum contained 5177 species. All were described in detail, with complete synonymies, distribution data, etc., in this series. This set is, clean unmarked, and except from some light spotting to a few endpapers, overall in mint condition. Dean I, p. 514.
