8vo., First Edition, with 3 full-page plans and front endpaper map; blue cloth, gilt back, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. David James was captured in 1943 when his MGB was sunk in the North Sea. Imprisoned at Marlag, he made several unsuccessful attempts at escape before finally bluffing his way to Stockholm disguised as a Bulgarian officer. After the war he served in the Antarctic and acted as adviser in the making of Charles Frend's classic feature film 'Scott of the Antarctic' (1948) starring John Mills.
