First edition, 8vo, 131, [1]pp., folding engraved frontispiece, bookplate and booksellers typed description pasted onto half-title, stitched as issued in orig. blue wrappers, nicely preserved in blue morocco slip-case, spine tooled in gilt. Aiton was best known as an agricultural writer: this locally-printed essay includes not only a critique of Scott for errors of fact and interpretation, but also a reflection (inspired by the Commemoration of Drumclog in 1815 and by the later disturbances in Scotland) on ìthe folly and danger of the lower orders in society becoming politicians or attempting to direct the governmentî. This was the first book printed at Hamilton.
